Ilayaraja Vs ARRehman - a het confrontation

Music makes merry. That too when backed up by film industry. The charisma of the film music is often influenced by many artists. Two of such greats are Mr.Ilayaraja and Mr.A.R.Rehman (both from Tamil Nadu). TN always had its perennial classical musicians and audience but slowly in mid 50s, a bend was silently rowing the boat towards film music. There came Mr.M.S.Viswanathan and Mr.Ramamoorthy(V & R), divulging the variety behind music and the musicians. Though V & R produced many beauties to list their assets, classical music was their main material. They were reluctant to use some of the western instruments. This scenario was crowning for nearly three decades. Finally, Raja made it to the surface, with his thunderous blockbuster, "Annakkili". In the year 1976, amidst blooming MGRs and Sivajis, Annakkili turned to be the greatest hit signaling signs of something unusual to the centering.

V & R were thoroughly out of the blue of Raja's entry. Their market soon underwent an onslaught. Raja, also was accused by some of the greats like TMS (Mr.T.M.Soundarrajan) for trespassing the limitations of film music. He not only had to prove his worth but also had to thrive the criticisms of his predecessors, which he managed well. Ultimately the situation succumbed the fame of Raja. He started hitting screens with great frequency. Within five years he had accomplished almost hundred films, out of which around fifteen were silver jubilee. He powered the industry with his amazing compositions. Often critiqued of providing only folk music, he contended well in his own style. Wanted to prove his worth in western music he disclosed some gems like "ilaya nila" etc etc. The lights of greatest directors and artists like Rajiniknth, Manirathnam, Balachander, Balumahendra, Fazil, Bharathiraja were all ignited by Raja.

In spite of the songs rendered, Raja was purely astonishing in his back ground scores. The BGMs are even acknowledged today with same admiration it got during their release. Most of such BGMs ringers in almost 70% of the modern mobile phones in TN. Till mid 90s it was Raja, having his tenure in film music. There entered the cyclone, cheering the industry with freshness and prosperity, A.R.Rehman. Getting his entitlement (IsaiPuyal) within ten films, he mastered the use of keyboard and percussion instruments.

He occupied the crease, with his class music and his abilities of sound engineering. Soon the frequency of Raja was declining though the quality of his music remained spirited. Meanwhile ARR reached great heights with "Vande Mataram" and "Bombay Dreams". Like Raja, ARR also brought out some big talents like Shankar and Rajiv Menon. Apparently, he captured almost all the big clients of Raja, starting from Maniratnam to Kathir. But, the freshness of all his compositions sustained only for a short span of time. He was frequently picked apart for the same reason. Even when he was holding the market, he couldn't deliver as consistently as Raja did, lacking also in numbers. But the market valued him very high, ultimately satisfying his business. Raja's top salary marked 25 lakh for Thalapathi, whereas ARR bested him almost in every film he did.

Raja still came out with some excellent hits like Kaadhalukku Mariyadhai, Heyram etc. Over today's trend, the freshness which ARR delivered, through which he outlasted, is being commanded by every music director. But the winkling music of Raja, which gold plated the creations and creators is everlasting. Every youngster is even humming songs of early 80s and are amusing with hits of Raja. ARR who was proclaimed as the new cyclone, lasted only for 9 scale years. ARR delivered his best only with worthwhile directors. Raja outlasted with almost every director he worked with. Moreover, film music is not only meant for commerce but should also target audience. Success is a journey and not a destination. Seems that ARR had lost his touch and crew but still Raja is coming out like Kasi and Virumandi.

Western music always has the glamour but the music of the land holds the beauty. Raja on that perspective, undoubtedly stands apart among all music directors(including ARR). "Vande Mataram" and "Bombay Dreams" are our pride but "How to name it" and "Nothing but wind" are our soul.

Ilayaraja has been denied the world class recongnition which he deserves a lot. He should be awarded for his contributions.

I don't think Music directors of different generation can be compared. Their working style was different: Consisntency eluded Raja, he opted to work for 50 films a year reducing quality output. This became the plus point for Rahman, less work but quality work.
Rahman has a very good melody range, on par with Raja.
Where Raja loses out is in Western ongs and Authentic hindi songs. Laagan, Swades, Bose, Zubeida are never in Raja's league. Rahman wins handsdown in this arena. Raja is a great Tamil Music director and Rahman is a great Indian Music director.

Even in success abroad Rahman has Bombay dreams and now Lord of the Rings but Raja didn't even release his 1st symphony for reasons best known to God and himself.
Infact it was Raja's monotonous music to some extent helped the trend change (Roja) acceptance easy.

RAHMAN CAN NEVER REACH THE QUALITY ILAYARAAJA HAS REACHED.
RAHMAN IS A GOOD MUSIC TAILOR WHO CUTS AND PASTES THE MUSIC FROM MANY INTERNET SPOTS.

SOME PIECES OF RAHMAN HAS BEEN ALREADY DONE BY VIDYASAGAR IN SOME OF HIS SONGS.

ALREADY RAHMANS PLACE IS LOST IN MOVIE CIRCLES.
THE RINGS WILL BE HIS LAST

BUT RAAJA IS GOING TO BE THE SAME MANY YEARS

Ilayaraja is a genius who has been denied what is due of him by the brahmin mafia. He is the best and Rahman is a bacha in front of him. Rahman is just a music tailor and sound engineer/

Ilaiyaraja is classical musician - probably the best ever. Rahman is a cheap rock musician. Ilaiyaraja is Mt. Everest. Rahman is mole hill.

Ilayaraja is cotemporary Beethovan and comparing him with A R Rahman is a great insult to music and Godess Saraswathy. People who has zero knowledge of music will do that. Ilayaraja is the only composer to combine Western Classic with Indian folk and Classical music. He has combined Western Classic(Not like A R Rahman cut and Paste music of Jazz and Rock) with Hindustani, Carnatic and Indian folk. His music had several diemensions. First stanza music will be different from second and in between also. These things can not be understood by people who are listening to noises of A R Rahman.

Please do not insult Godess Sarawathy as She is in Ilayaraja. This is told by not me but by Kanchi munivar(Paramacharya)a great personality.

some of raja's phrases in carnatic ragas are beautiful like in gowlai and nalinakanthi. he has a full grasp of both western and eastern classical music. his use of counterpoints and canons and fugues and particularly counterpoints in almost 80% of his songs stand testimony to his talent.

but where does 'brahmin mafia' come here. edhula daan jaadhia puguthardhunu vevasthaiye kedayadhaa? i pity that person.

Ilaiyaraja : India's Greatest Composer !

There is no doubt as years pass by people will understand the genious of Ilayaraja. He has same fate like Subramania Bharathi. During Bharathi's lifetime he was not appreciated but now we know what Bharathi did in short time for Tamil Poetry and you can always classify Tamil Poetry before Bharathi and after him. Like that Indian Film music before Ilayaraja and after him that is his contribution. Her Brahmin mafia means persons like GV/Maniratnam/T N Seshan etc who lifted A R Rahman for composing for a film like ROJA, whose music now no one remembers. Where as till today songs of Mounaragam/Thalabathi/Agninatshatringal(All Maniratnam's movies) are ever lasting. What melody and composition. I do not think any one can put 25% of such songs. Rahman was given all possible awards including Padmashri for such rubbish music. That is why we call Brahmin Mafia has lifted a medicore musician to world level.

Ilayaraja is a master. I have been a great fan of vamsi a director all of whose hits have Ilayaraja ir's scores.

I have one big reason why Ilayaraja sir is better, his music has longevity. i can still listen to his tunes like Shiva, April 1st vidhudala, ladies tailor, All of chiranjeevi's 80's and 90's movies. I cant listen to rangeela or Hindustani any more. i cant even listen to sakhi or roja. Rehman's songs loose thier freshness with in a short span, Soon, harris, yuvan, DSp and a lot of other directors will over take him. i simply dont care for Bollywood music, i either listen to tamil or telugu music , so for me ilayaraja forever.

Longevity and sustained freshness is very important, majority of Rahman's songs sound crass after few rounds of listening.

These days i dont like the heavy western orchestrization being used by rehamn, It sounds more like a Western aria.

I doubt that if IR or anybody gets a chance they can win? You can't compare illayaraja, msv, Veda or deva, naushad or burman or some etc. I accept that. So many thoughts and questions, some of them are below,

- In the last decades ever since India got independence, who had some ambition to go beyond India or Indian music, except some fusion artists like Rvi Shankar, Zakir, Hariharan, L.shankar etc who showed their own talent to prove themselves?
- Have any of the composers had any knowldge to take Indian music(every style and type) and go global?
- Which composer opted for less films a year vs a.r.rahman worked 4 to 5 films or less or none in a year to make only rich music and make less money?
- Who revived some of the dead but alive excellent artists like hariharan, sujatha, alisha and many more and bring them to light, still using the current best famous without banging on the same famous artist to monopolize?
- Who recognized many unknown musicians, instrumentalists and gave them recognition?
- Who brought together various cherished indian musical geniuses, who thought film music is a bad way to go and get recognized?
- Why always every kind of musician bow their head to a.r.rahman never caring about the money involved?
- You hear all talking heads in the music filed in India. Did they ever popularize any of their talent to reach the world audience or try to go global? If not, who they depend on now?
- Forget the south India. Did anyone from the bollywood who represent India did their best to get indian music to the hollywood ? Don't say ravi shankar, he was choosen because he was a lucky Indian and he didn't do much there? He even had relations with the beatles. Still today he and his generation is playing the same sitar with same style with no ambitions to hit world music, preserving the classical roots and rules, which is agood thing.
- Did anybody from india tried a world music like a.r.rahman did? Chinese, persian, spanish, arabic..etc?
- Why does not any composer in india can't even get closer to his talent?
- Has any compser took a veteran proud singer for almost many decades to to the doors of oscar nomination, like latha mangeshkar for lagaan?
- Have you seen a quiet and humble composer after acheiving so much, not insulting anybody and encouraging everyone around anywhere in the world, not running behind fame or anything that make a human being unhappy?
- Has any composer in India managed to compose music for various parts of our country called the '*woods' making everybody happy, all at same time?
- Has any composer in India recognized, introduced hundreds and possibly more during their career, recognizing talent in everybody?
- Have you seen a composer dumping an artist for personal reasons and not recognizing their talent?
- Who always went ahead without getting in to any issues and skipping bollywood media buzz for fame?
- Who doesn't have a education in music from some teacher or from a great school like Trinity College in London. Ilayaraja had that long time back like a.r.rahman? So what?
- Is there anybody currently or in the past skilled like a.r.rahman in the pipeline to understand local music as well as the world music to represent India?
- Is there a mouth in India to tell the world, these are the variety of Indian music, this is how Indian music is also great when compared to the international music and we can definitely entertain the world?
- Who revolutionized and changed the face of Indian music?
- Who even changed his relgion to live in peace, be an example to the world and still making all kinds of people happy with his music?
- Who can even change the country's national anthem sound so excellent and more patriotic, accepted by everybody, in a country of billion people?

It is A.R.Rahman!

There won't be another gandhi or mother teresa going to be on this earth again. A.R.Rahman is a god's child and we should be proud to live with him while we live on this earth and not compare him with others. Long live the legendary Rahman!

Hi Vensub...

Though I don't agree on all the facts, I agree on some.

The globalised music, talents brought out... are indeed true with Mr. AR. But, I find him still alienated from heartfelt music, which IR accomplished a long way back. AR is a different music director and has talents in differnt genres of music. He surely impresses people from differnt parts of India (and now the world too). But, why exactly the 90s songs of AR are not heard as frequently as that of 80s IR songs? There has to be some soulsearching. For different music I can accept AR is a master, but for songs that could disturb me and console me, I always depend on IR. These are simply my thoughts.
While writing the post, I knew that some of the AR fans wont accept these ideas. I respect them, but there are certain facts about both IR and AR. We have to look at those facts.

Illayaraja brought tamilians back to tamil music (many tamilians were going to hindi or other music). AR Rahman made non tamilians across the globe listen to tamil numbers. This doesn't make ARR better, it was more to do with exposure and visibility, especially in the internet world. But end of the day there is no match to the versatility of Illayaraja's music that lingers and makes me happy even today

One of the post comparing bharathiyar with illayaraja is apt, he is going to be known for ever.

ARR may win oscars, but illayaraja would win tamilians for generations to come

Go.Ganesh said...

Hey Michael.. Ilaiyaraja's Jazz is a proven success. Listen to Agni Natchathiram songs.

I don't think even if AR composes folk music that cannot be rated on par with IR's folk because folk is IR's forte.

Similarly, if IR composes western music that cannot be rated on par with AR's music because western music is AR's forte.

But, FYI both of them have graduated from trinity college. So, you cannot say one can compose and one cannot compose.

But, the real fact of difference is the way the songs get into the heart and soul. I dun think AR moved me with any of his songs. But, IR consistently did it. I cannot expect a AR lullaby which is as soothing as 'Kanne Kalaimane'.

michael said...

of course kanna kalaimane is too good.but have you heard te song vellai pookal from kannathil muthamital.have you heard te song ennavale adi ennavale from kadhalan?
ter are many more songs of ARR to spk about.it gives a better feeling than ilayaraja's songs.te fact is u cant accept ARR is better than ilayaraja.but ARR is better.ilayaraja is monotonous.

Hey Michael.. it can go either way... Thats why people say you have to perceive art... I think u can include music into the list of arts too...

The way u love ARR, I am for IR... its a simple fact... If u still want to prove that ARR is best let us start discussing the nuances of their creation...

I am certainly not against the talent and calibre of ARR. He is one of the genuine composers...h

The tittle to A R Rahman "Mozart of Madras" is an insult to Mozart. Mozart never used rhythmic beats once in his compositions. In western classical music, beat is avoided, as it is considered offensive to intelligence (Listen to ant classical composition!). Beats are rock-style, meant for inferior minds to dance in drunken stupor. A R Rahman's music puts beat at the very centre of any song driving out artistic beauty. It perfect for dancing in semi-conscious state. Ilaiyaraaja composes music putting melody at the centre and weaving an orchestration around it. If any, the tittle should go to him.

Illayaraja Vs. Rehman by Deepa Iyyer

Being a cine music buff, for many years since the release of ROJA I have been toiling with this debate , Illayaraja vs Rehman. Initially to start with it was difficult for me to accept change , when Rehman entered the music scenario and created revolution in the music industry. His music tends to grow and makes you like it with every repeat of his track. Midway I got swayed by Rehman’s success and was in fact listening more of his numbers. But just one track of Illayaraja’s and I got back falling at Illayaraja’s feet. Now I have my reasons for it.

TALENT : I am definitely not a person who is blatantly going to deny Rahman’s talent. His never before heard sound, his arrangement, different voices that he uses every now and then, the voice modulation, the peppy numbers and his fusion of Indian and western music is definitely an inspiration for many. It is high time we welcome change. Whenever people doubted his talent he has always come up with some good and classic numbers like ennavale ennavale (Kadhalan), narumukaye narumukaye ( Iruvar), PUdhu vellai mazhai( ROJA), THoda THoda malarndhad enna ( Indira), en male vizhundha mazhai thuliye ( May Matham).

Credit should also be given to Rehman for endeavoring to make every album hearable. If you are taking a long drive along the ECR road , with Rahman’s music you can blindly pick up the whole C.D and not just one or two songs and listen to them , relax and enjoy, something which you cannot claim about Illayaraja.

The sound of Rahman’s music is indeed amazing… No wonder the north too without much delay welcomed him with open arms right from his first film. He rules the Indian music industry and is now recognized at an international level too which is a matter of pride..

SPIRITUALITY : Another remarkable quality that we should all learn from him is his humility amidst the success that surrounds him, his spirituality , his conduct( He seems to be a family oriented person) and his single minded focus on music all the twenty four hours. Illayaraja had all the above qualities except humility which partly resulted in people not acknowledging his talent.

The Flip side : But the flip side of A.R.Rahman’s music is with the passage of time, I feel he is repeating himself too much and seems to succumb to the pressure of the filmmakers. Knowledge wise I feel Illayaraja wins hands down .. Look at the range of notes that he explores in songs like Ithazhil kathai ezhuthum neram idhu. Or Andhi mazhai pozhigiradhu or pani vizhum malar vanam, Roja poo aadi vandadhu. Illayaraja’s sound was new too when he entered but ensured that he retained the knowledge of M.S.V. I somehow feels that way Rahman is not exploring music , the range up to which it can be explored. He seems to be more interested in technology. His notes always ends short and comes back to square one . His tunes are simple and not complicated. Nothing wrong with that but for his celebrity status he should be doing a much better job. His tunes can be sung by moderate singers but some of Raja’s tunes can be sung only by good singers. Some of Raja’s tunes have barely had any instruments, but I doubt whether Rahman would be able to manage that. Knowledge wise that is the real test for a composer.

Background Score : Another complaint that I have against Rehman is his background score. I do not know why he simply plays his songs again in the background score(re-recording) without attempting anything new. Well I do not know how many of you would agree. Probably Illayaraja is not the god of music but I feel he is definitely the god of re-recording. Some of his background tracks ( especially Mounaragam) and few othera not so noticed films should definitely rank in the top 5 re-recording tracks. Even Rehman has acknowledged that Raja’s background score is a distinct element in the film(By the way it is so graceful of Rahman to have said that)

In fact the best of Illayaraja and Rehman have been from Manirathnam’s films. If Mani had worked with Raja probably we would have had more beautiful numbers. But this is what ego can do to a man.

Writing of notes : Another quality that all musicians have acknowledged is raja’s ability to write down the notes in a short span of time. He never took the kind of time that Rahman takes for his films which is a common complaint even with filmmakers like Manirathnam. Though as listeners we are not concerned with all the aspects Raja should be given credit for it. Undeniably Raja has given some soul stirring numbers, but somehow I am yet to come across one such number of Rahmans where I can say “ No one could have composed that except Rahman “. For Rahman’s star status he should give us numbers like Oothokadu Venkata subaiyer’s “ Alaipayuthe “.

But this is definitely not a statement denying Rahman’s genius in blending music and technology. In short A.R.R is the god of techno music. Kudos to Rahman once again for changing the face of Indian music industry single handedly and winning those Oscars which is everybody’s dream

Verdict : If you want to enjoy music, relax , not too worried about the nuances and intricacies then Rahman should be your pick.( It can be compared to watching a Rajnikanth movie ) But then if you have an analytical bent of mind then Illayaraja would be your ultimate choice( It is like watching a Kamal haasan movie)

Who the hell told out that AR rahman is better than illayaraja when it comes to western music. Even in the western music
genre Illayaraja easily outshines AR. The most recent example I would quote is "Mumbai Express".What
an excellent rendition of Irish Jazz throughout the movie hitherdo unheard in any Indian movie.
Other examples would be Enakkul Oruvan, Kalaignan(title song by SPB, best example of smooth jazz)), Mouna ragam, Idhaya geetam (the song sangeetha megam) and
countless others.

What ARR does is a very crude and superficial form of western music like ie RAP, HIP HOP etc
and some modern techno sounds that is highly pretentious and artificial, but strikes an instant chord with college students. Most of these students usually are not exposed to more refined forms of western music like classical, Jazz, Art rock, Blues etc. In fact ARR is kind of good in presenting Classical Indian music better than western music. (eg May Madham, Jeans and the song sahana in sivaji) and in fact these are the one's that stand out among ARR's compositions.

ARR is basically a good sound engineer and that has helped him lend some novel and innovative sounds while scoring BGM music. But that is not to be misconstrued as great compositions. Unfortunately, this is what is happening in the film industry and most of them who were put off by illayaraja's attitude started singing Paens of ARR and the result is the success he is enjoying today.I am not discrediting the hard work he is putting in, but he doesn't seem to have the kind of natural flair that IR Seems to have.

I am happy that ARR has won Oscars for India. Again that doesn't make him a better musician than IR
and the songs for which he has one proves that he is a better technician than a musician.

Lastly, I liked the post by Geeta Iyer comparing IR & ARR to Kamal & Rajini respectively.
That was very precise and I have felt that way too. If you want to just listen to some foot tapping
numbers blarring in your latest Stereo systems then go for ARR. But if you looking for more depth and soul, then IR simply wins hands down.

The problem with people is not understanding 'True Music' and opening up to accomplishments of other 'Music' cultures.

It is foolish to say 'Indian Music' is better than 'American Jass'. No 'Arabian Music' composer would make such idiotic statements. We Indians delude ourselves into thinking we are the best and hence are not open to better things from outside.

Illayaraja failed because he was able to cater to only 'Tamilians' and 'South Indians'. Another trait in Illayaraja was going after fame and calling himself 'God' in certain of his songs reasoning he is a 'creator' of music, forgetting 'Music' is just frequencies which led to his downfall.

Unlike Illayaraja AR Rehman is humble and unassuming, which is a bench mark of Great Musicians like 'BalamuraliKrishna'. The best thing about AR Rehman is that he is open to world music and incorporate music from across the nook and corner of world into his compositions. We will find, Arabic, Spanish, Greek, Hindustani, European, North American, South American influence in AR Rahman's composition.

That is the reason why AR Rahman's composition is liked the world over, while those of the others are restricted to 'South India'.

master,

I accept that there is no such thing as one form of music being superior to other form of music. Usually classical music is more technical than other genres. That is the main difference. That being said, you are wrong in saying that illayaraja catered only to south indians and tamilians. Infact, he was the first one
to break free from the accepted notions about music, boldly incorporating elements of Western classical and
Jazz, rock and roll into film music.
In many interviews he has mentioned that it is wrong to restrict or divide music based on regionalism or nationalism.
He popularized the use of saxaphones and flutes in tamil films.

I gave some examples of songs already in my previous post. The most recent example would be from the film "Mumbai express". Jazz has never been used to that extent in any Indian film so far that I have heard. Listen to song idhu oru nila kaalam ( Movie tik tik tik done 30 yrs ago). You should have to carefully listen before making comments. ARR is a very good sound technician
and has the knack of using sounds from world music. But he is never able to delve deeply into any particular genre and usually borders on commercialism. He employs various new singers( which is good) to infuse variety into his music, but the orchestrations are not very rich due to the fact that he tries to create
sounds of different instruments with a single instrument rather than employ musicians to play them. OTHO,IR's orchestrations are very rich (eg nothing but wind & Music Messiah, the song AYe Zindagi from SADMA ) and have more depth in them.

Actually, the only thing IR has not done is Arabian or persian music which is where ARR scores over him.

Also, there is this misconception that IR is good only in folk music. Unfortunately, the folksier side of illayaraja
has been overemphasized. This is due to the kind of films that were made and were popular when he entered the industry. How can you expect him to play keyboards and drums when the hero of the film is an uneducated youth
and central theme of the film involved a village mileau. Despite not having wider reach, he still captivated
the "Royal Philharmonic" Orchestra that asked him to compose a symphony(not south indian) for them.

On the contrary,ARR entered the industry during the internet
and MTV era and that gave a lot of exposure to his music throughout India. This doesn't mean with ARR playing world class music. In fact,as mentioned by many he is yet to prove that he is really worth the fame he is enjoying.
There is a certain superficiality about his music which is yet to impress the more deep listeners. At best, his music can impress teenagers and collegers or people not interested in more serious music.

For all those guys who say "MAESTRO" is not humble.....

"MAESTRO" never proclaims that these tunes are his and reveals this infront of the media or someone.
He always says "I am not great composer...all that I have done is showed some essence of music to people which "Thyagaraja" and "Annamacharya " have already done centuries back.
Never ever treat me as a great compose".

Please!!!!Never do again bring a comparison between Rahaman and "MAESTRO".
"MAESTRO" is a unique masterpiece handpicked by god to bestow his musical genius on this world.
He is the only Asian whose orchestra has been recorded by the prestigious "Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" of London.
He is the only musician to compose a song in three swaras.
He is the only musician to fuse classical and western music.
He is the only musician to have composed 6 songs in 30 minutes.
He is the only musician to have done a classical symphony ("Thiruvasagam") on hymns of " Lord shiva".

"RAJA IS MUSIC ....MUSIC IS RAJA"

Never.....

Ilayaraja can not be compared with any Indian composer. He is India's greatest composer ever. People who knows music will never compare Ilayaraja with any one. 20 years of melodious music in all south Indian languages and Raja's music represents India's soul. He does not require an Oscar/Grammy award to prove it as they are given for American Films/Music which has nothing to do with India's rich music culture of more than 5000 years. In fact Rahman has killed Hindi film golden melodies of S D Burmans/Shanka Jaikishans/Naushads. Ilayaraja recreated those days with his brilliant melodies.

Bravo Ilayaraja !

Clearly a Generation Thing...
People who heard IR first stick to IR...people who heard AR first ...stick to AR....When I say heard first...i mean you hear their songs firs,t at a time when you start appreciating music yourself.....I heard AR first and am a diehard fan of his.....I have heard IR songs later and love many of them but for me, nothing can shake AR from the top spot. From purely a music point, people may debate the greatness of these 2 Geniuses...But when it comes to being an human being...there are no doubts(atleast to my mind)...
I have spent some time reading up on both just because this debate pops up a lot and one other thing that has further strengthened my awe of ARR is his attitude, I've read many counts of how IR, though a genius had a lot of headweight was quite arrogant at times. His treatment of his technicians and singers, giving limited scope of growth to the people who work with him. Recently, I read about IR taking a swipe at ARR, about the comments ARR made at the oscars.
http://chennaionline.com/film/news/aug09/89isaignani-takes-a-dig-at-a-r-rahman.aspx
When you see things like these, I am sorry, but ARR is clearly my idol.

Illayaraja sir is benediction to the world of film music and music as a whole. His music is simply divine. Illayaraja sir once said in one of his interviews:
‘ I compose a tune and release it everyone say it is very good and soul touching.
So I shall not claim any credits for that. I think it is the God who comes into me and does it. Otherwise how it can be liked by mass of people. He also said in several occasions that he does not claim any credits for his success. He did not like people saying he is a great composer. He openly said in BBC interview that he makes some gimmick in music like a magician deceive the audience. Of course it is out of his humility but we cannot really take it as it is. He is really a genius with a divine touch.

Raja sir came from a very humble village background with practically no musical environment or influence unlike ARR whose father himself is a renowned musician. Illayaraja sir was from the period were there was no big technology for sound recording, mixing , instrumentation etc as we have now. Creating soul touching tunes with excellent music and Orchestration in spite of all these odds was a really an outstanding accomplishment.

I respect ARR for his modernity and influential music. I praise him for some his composition in Kannathil Muthamittaal, Alay Payude, Minnale, Roja, Bombay etc., Somehow oflate I find it is becoming repetitive . I could not really appreciate the songs and the BGM of the recent release Raavanan. I feel it could have been surely handled better. There was lots of scope in the film to incorporate a deep BGM for the emotional sequences.

IR could have handled it surely better. This is my opinion.

But IR sir’s compositions like in Nizhalgal, Jhoni, kallukkul Eeram, Sidhu Bairavi, Hey Ram, Guna, Mudhal mariathai, Kadalora Kavithaigal, Nenjathai Killathey, Anjali,
Nayagan, Geethanjali.. ( wow list is neverending…) are something heavenly.
His music takes us to another plane and leaves us there for a while.

Please note that when you hear the music in a song like ‘Isayil thodangudhamma’ in Hey Ram or Om Sivoham in Naan Kadavul or ‘Kodiyile Malligaipoo ‘ in Kadalora kavithaigal or ‘Adi penne’ in Mullum Malarum, please listen the complexity of the orchestration and the instrumentation. Watch the flow of raaga nd the melody.
Watch the blend of fold, western and classical music notes and how wonderfully and skillfully they are interwoven.

Finally I tell you all, I am still wondering that how Illayaraja sir had visualised the complexity of music of this sort before he composed and executed. This demonstrates his creative vision and the depth of his understanding and passion for the music. I wish his music journey should continue and I pray the almighty to give him long life and health to give the divinely music to the people through him.
I am not worrying the Illayraja is not properly recognised. But him fans in their heart have given him so much of respect which is million times worth than an Oscar or any othe so called awards on this material planet.

But I donot undermining ARRs gifted talents and skills. He has influenced the mass with his different approach . my appreciations to him for making the best use of technology and innovation to make his music to reach the mass. I wish him all the very best as well. Of course it is not at all a comparison and I strongly believe that one should not compare two different creators.
